Six years old. The age we start school, the age our parents let us out into the world. It's been a big six years for Bombtrack – what began as a little fixed-gear brand has turned into something much bigger. A company producing bikes for just about any terrain that can be ridden.
So what’s on our first report card? The bikes continued exploring new parts of the world. Carrying our friend Marc Maurer onwards around the world, his <A Journey Beyond> odyssey saw him seeking out adventure in Kyrgyzstan. Joachim Rosenlund completed the gruelling <Highland Trail 550> in Scotland, while closer to home Clem Shovel crossed Germany as the third fastest rider at the <Trans Germany> race. Taking the Bombtrack show on the road, our supported events the Dirty Reiver in Great Britain, Tuscany Trail in Italy, and Dirty Boar in Belgium have also brought our bikes and lust for adventure to the masses.
With the signing of our newest team member Gosse van der Meer we’ve also poked a muddy toe into the elite European cyclo-cross circuit. This season he’ll be taking on the competition aboard one of our entirely new line of race-ready cyclo-cross bikes.
Named the Tension, the Tension 1 and Tension 2 share the same all-new, alloy frame featuring geometry inspired by our former Hook AL cyclo-cross bike and rendered with bang-up-to-date hydroforming technology. At the head of the pack, the top-tier Tension 3 represents the rebirth of our carbon cyclo-cross chassis – built without compromise for the toughest of courses.
Also new this year, the popularity of our revised road-plus Audax last year has inspired an aluminium cousin – the Audax AL. Featuring an innovative bottom bracket and chainstay assembly, it allows us to package robust 650b wheels and 47c wide tyres, mudguards, road cranks, and snappy handling into a slinky package. Simultaneously, its hydroformed tubing and intelligent butting redefine the comfort and performance achievable by an alloy frame.
Finally, we’re introducing a turbo-charged alter-ego to the Hook EXT: The Hook ADV. The ADV takes everything we loved about mountain bikes in the 90s and transplants it into a fun, modern, drop bar package. With 40mm of front suspension from MRP, a dropper post from KS, huge tyres from WTB, and a Ritchey cockpit, we reckon it’s the most radical Bombtrack to date.
Constantly refining our bikes, we're also excited to apply the tough T47 bottom bracket system to most of our range for 2019. The threaded T47 standard helps us continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with steel frames by allowing the use of oversized tubing and providing for even more tyre clearance. And all while ensuring silent operation and bulletproof reliability for years to come.
New bikes then, but each made with the same formula that’s brought so many fresh and smiling faces to our young brand. We hope scrolling through the pages of our latest catalogue you’ll see how much we love what we do, and maybe even find some new inspiration to ride. See you out there!
In 2012 the German couple Franzi and Jona (“Tales on Tyres”) quit their jobs and went for a global hiking tour starting in New Zealand before crossing to India and Nepal. Soon they got tired of walking, organised some bikes and continued on two wheels through Iran and Mongolia. After working in Canada for a year to replenish their funds, they started their current trip zig-zagging from Alaska to Patagonia. After completing “The Great Divide” they realised the bikes they were using couldn’t withstand the conditions they were encountering – and that’s how we came on board. We met up with Franzi and Jona in the Sierra Nevada in September last year and provided them 2 of our Beyond+ bikes. After getting them loaded up Franzi and Jona headed south, to take on the “Baja Divide”.
The word ‘epic’ is often over used, but when it comes from our friend Marc Maurer, who last year rode from Cologne to the Black Sea and decided rather than to fly home, he’d just turn around and ride back…we had to pay attention. Marc’s journey was fully justified as ‘epic’ he left in May 2015 headed for Istanbul, Turkey and the Caucasus mountains. His journey was a total of 5600km, passing through culturally rich regions of Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and finally Iran. Along the way he visited many stunning locations across the Caucasus, keep your eyes on this channel for future photos and videoclips.
Marc was traveling alone for the most part, but occasionally met up with friends for certain stretches of the journey. His daily companion was our prototype ‘Beyond’, a bike built and designed to be capable for virtually any adventure you have in mind. On road or off it, the Beyond uses a geometry that ensures a stable and solid feeling no matter how loaded the bike is. Marc was carrying everything he needed with him thanks to a set of bike bags and rear pannier bags. In addition to the luggage, Marc has made a few other adjustments to the bike for his trip, with a TT bar, dyno hub and his trusty Flite saddle.
Below is a visual reflection on this incredible adventure, documents with images, words and also in an upcoming short film. So be sure to stay tuned to our social media for news on its release.
